Diablo JA Club’s Summer Festival This Weekend

CONCORD — The Diablo Japanese American Club, 3165 Treat Blvd. in Concord, will hold its annual Japanese Summer Festival on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 8-9.

Food booths will offer such dishes as beef and chicken teriyaki, gyoza, hot dogs, sushi, tempura, udon and shave ice. The bake shop will sell manju, mochi, ice cream and other sweets. Beer and sake will also be available.

Demonstrations of calligraphy and Ikenobo ikebana will be given, and bonsai will be on display.

Entertainment will include koto, kendo, judo, drumming by Diablo Taiko, Sonoma Taiko, Tatsumaki Taiko and San Jose Taiko, Japanese folk songs and dance by Matsutoyo Kai, and Japanese classical dance by Michiya Hanayagi, Michisuya Hanayagi and their students.

Obon odori begins at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and 6:30 p.m. on Sunday. The last Obon dance practice will be held on Monday, Aug. 3, from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m.

The festival will also feature a raffle drawing (need not be present to win), a crafts boutique, and children’s games.

Free parking is available at Ygnacio Valley High School, 755 Oak Grove Rd., with free shuttle service running throughout the day. Although disabled parking on site is very limited, there is a drop-off/pick-up area in front of the building.
