Honoring Legacy of Hershey Miyamura

GALLUP, N.M. — Three scholarships in the name of Korean War Medal of Honor recipient Hiroshi “Hershey” Miyamura were given on April 26 as part of the sixth annual Senior Recognition Night at Hiroshi Miyamura High School in Gallup, N.M..

The scholarship recipients were:

– Larry Belinte, who will be attending the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute.

– Kolton Sorrell, who plans to study engineering at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology and was a member of a team that built robotics for competition.

– Shania N. Yazzie, who will specialize in welding at Tulsa Welding.

Miyamura High School offers students an opportunity to take vocational skills classes at the University of New Mexico as part of their high school education in addition to college preparatory courses. These technical classes provide 70 percent of the skills to get into a career and include carpentry, plumbing, welding, baking, restaurant services, medical terminology, telecommunications and broadcast news media.

This year the school counselors encouraged the vocational studies students to apply for the Miyamura Scholarship.
