JA Alumnae of Cal to Gather April 9
OAKLAND — Japanese American Woman Alumnae of UC Berkeley will hold their annual get-together on Saturday, April 9, at Yoshi’s Oakland, 510 Embarcadero West near Oakland’s Jack London Square.
Business meeting begins at 11 a.m., luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Program follows from 12 to 2:30 p.m.

The keynote speech, “Journey to Justice,” will be given by Mariko Yamada, former California State Assembly member and lifelong social worker whose top priorities include aging and long-term care, agriculture and natural resources, and the unending quest for social, educational, economic, and environmental justice for the most vulnerable in our communities.
The recipients of the 2016 JAWAUCB undergraduate and graduate scholarships are Yuriko Kishi, Ai Nakazawa, Maryann Saito, Melanie Sakurada, Kristen Shimoda, Yukie Toyama and Hikaru Miyazaki.
Kiku Funabiki will be recognized as Outstanding Alumna of the Year. She is a “late bloomer” activist who has exhorted seniors to become active. She was interned at Heart Mountain in Wyoming and testified to her experiences before the Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians in the 1980s. Her writings are included in several volumes of stories about World War II.
