JACCC to Launch ‘Twilight in the Garden’

This summer, the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center presents four intimate outdoor concerts on consecutive Sundays from 5 to 9 p.m. in its James Irvine Japanese Garden in Little Tokyo.

Bring your friends to hear L.A.’s best live music and Dublab DJs. Treat yourself to food, drinks, and specially curated summer beverages by Little Tokyo’s Far Bar. Visit and experience the magic hours of the summer with great company inside a Japanese garden. Featured groups are as follows:

• July 5: Quartetto Fantastico (quartettofantastico.com), which is composed of four musicians — Chris Woods, Paul Cartwright, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and Peter Jacobson — that think and play outside the box, covering a wide range of repertoire in various styles, from classical to jazz to hip-hop to modern, including original compositions from the players.

• July 12: Buyepongo (buyepongo.com), which has deep roots in South and Central America and draws heavily from the Latino musical culture. Taking their cues from traditional “roots” music of Colombia, Haiti, Belize, Honduras and the Dominican Republic, Buyepongo creates a very vibrant polyrhythmic sound by seamlessly fusing merengue, punta, and cumbia.

• July 19: Ethio Cali (ethiocali.com), an ensemble whose sublime sound is inspired by the golden age of Ethiopian music of the 1960s and ’70s, filtered through a lens that is uniquely Los Angeles. Acknowledging the diverse musical foundations of Ethio-jazz, the ensemble also draws inspiration from the rhythmic and melodic textures of Sudan, Somalia, Ghana, and Colombia.

• July 26: Shafiq Husayn & Dove Society (shafiqhusayn.bandcamp.com). As one-third of SA-RA Creative Partners, Shafiq Husayn helped change the world, producing, writing and collaborating with a diverse cast of artists, from Common to Kanye, Jill Scott to J Dilla and Erykah Badu. The aspects of music that SA-RA helped reintroduce to hip-hop and RnB can be heard today throughout the current musical climate.
