JANL, JARF to Present ‘Reflections on Theological Education’

SAN FRANCISCO — The Japanese American National Library, together with the Japanese American Religious Federation and the Asia Project at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, will present a community program, “Reflections on Theological Education,” on Saturday, Nov. 18, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Union Bank Community Room, located in the East Building of the Japan Center, 1675 Post St. in San Francisco Japantown.

This the second of a three-part series, “The Transforming Spiritual Landscape of Peripheral Faith Communities: A Road Map to the Future.”

A panel of minority educators and faith leaders will include Bishop Roy Sano and Professors Edmond Yee, Fumitaka Masuoka, Archie Smith, and Russell Moy. They will share a lifetime of reflection, experience, and struggle as they prepare future ministers and congregations for the changing demographics of our communities, the growing tendency toward (multi-faith) blending of spiritual and religious experiences, and continuing issues of institutional survival.

Specifically, the panelists will reflect on their efforts to redesign theological education for future ministers in the face of traditional mainstream conservatism and intransigence.

This will be a rare opportunity to learn from and to interact with theologians and educators who have helped to shape our current faith communities of color. Dr. Ronald Nakasone will moderate.
