Nikkei Angel Island Pilgrimage Set for Oct. 3

SAN FRANCISCO — The second Nikkei Angel Island Pilgrimage will take place on Saturday, Oct. 3.

Program with speakers and performance begins at 11 a.m. at the Immigration Station at Angel Island State Park.

Presented by the Nichi Bei Foundation in partnership with the Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation and National Japanese American Historical Society, with support from the California Genealogical Society and San Francisco JACL.

Participants are invited to rediscover the little-known history of the Japanese and Japanese American legacy at Angel Island in San Francisco Bay, where 85,000 persons of Japanese descent — the second-largest immigrant group detained on the island — landed between 1910 to 1940, before setting foot in America.

The schedule is designed to allow a free flow of activity during the day. Participants can visit the Immigration Station exhibits, see displays on the Japanese and Japanese American history at Angel Island, engage in genealogy research, learn about community history and what various organizations are doing, and enjoy time with family, friends and colleagues.

Pre-order packages that include ferry transportation and bento are available. For more information, visit www.nichibei.org/angel-island-pilgrimage/.
