Showcase for Performers at NJAHS Peace Gallery

SAN FRANCISCO — The National Japanese American Historical Society and The Buffet Show present “Waves” on Saturday, Dec. 2, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the NJAHS Peace Gallery, 1684 Post St. in San Francisco Japantown.

“This event is a free, limited seating engagement inspired by the Call to Action from the children of Fred T. Korematsu, Min Yasui, and Gordon Hirabayashi to create an opportunity for artists and storytellers, regardless of performing experience, to rise and share their artistic expression in hopes that we do not go down a similar path in history that led to the incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II,” organizers said.

“Our hope is to showcase seasoned performers as well as nurture and cultivate new artists, and that this multi-generational, cross-cultural event will have a ripple effect resonating with people beyond the San Francisco Bay Area.”

Featured performers include Francis Wong, Janice Mirikitani (invited), Genny Lim (invited), Brynn Saito, Fatima Mekkaoui, Peter Yamamoto, Yukiya Jerry Waki, Joe Gabel and Tony Robles (final line-up subject to change).

Five open-mic sign-ups available at the beginning of the event. If sign-ups exceed the space allotted, then a lottery will take place.

Special guest appearance by Karen Korematsu, daughter of Fred Korematsu and executive director of the Fred T. Korematsu Institute.
