Supervisor Hahn Announces Appointees to Blue Ribbon Commission on Public Safety

Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn on Oct. 24 announced her appointees to the recently created Blue Ribbon Commission on Public Safety.

Her appointees, Lt. Brian Moriguchi and Jamie Kyle, were confirmed at that day’s Board of Supervisors meeting.

The Blue Ribbon Commission on Public Safety was proposed by Supervisors Hahn and Kathryn Barger in August to examine the impact of recent statewide criminal justice reforms and develop creative solutions to the challenges facing law enforcement in L.A. County.

Moriguchi is a lieutenant in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and a member of the California Committee of the U.S. Commission on Human Rights. He is affiliated with the Professional Peace Officers Association, the Japanese American Citizens League, and the Fraternal Order of Police.

“Lt. Moriguchi will bring the important perspective of law enforcement to the Blue Ribbon Commission,” said Hahn. “His years of personal experience give him the ability to discern what will work and what won’t while the commission examines creative solutions to keep our communities and our law enforcement officers safe.”

Kyle is a resident of Harbor City. She works as a community advocate at the Reverence Project as well as a parent organizer at Common Sense Kids Action. She lost her brother, Terrell Sherrills, in 2004 to homicide, and is a domestic violence survivor. Her father is Aqeela Sherrills, founder of the Reverence Movement. She was recommended as an appointee to the Blue Ribbon Commission by Californians for Safety and Justice, a group that advocates for criminal justice reforms.

“Jamie Kyle is a longtime community advocate and organizer,” said Hahn. “As an advocate for criminal justice reform, victim’s rights, and a victim of crime herself, she has a unique and nuanced experience. She knows her community and will be an asset to the commission.”

The first meeting of the Blue Ribbon Commission will be on Oct. 30.
